Today, I want to think in terms of physics,You can also try this, it's fun. I am now sitting near a pool. Water has a soothing noise. In physics we describe liquid state, in terms of atoms positioned not far from each other. Actually molecules formed from couple of atoms attract each other due to charge distribution in them is not homogenous.
(dipole forces) . In atomic theory, we think everything forms from very tiny pieces, atoms. When they apart, they barely interact, like in gases. In liquids they interact more, and even more in solids. Atoms moves around with very high speeds in gas form think like airplanes moving around. They vibrate in liquid and solid form due to constraints in their positions. All this motion is due to heat content. So, motion is the basis of all. Why so? It s related to the beginning of universe. We start with very energetic state (high temperature) and cool down with time. In our daily life water freezing and boiling point would be relevant temperatures. To make the atom stop we need about hundrends less than these temperatures. even then, there is motion due
to quantum fluctuations. To freeze atom is impossible. Let's come back to water. It changes phase to gas or solid when we add to or subtract energy from the system. That is usually the case with any material. when temperature increases, water starts to boil and becomes gas. There is distribution of speeds for the atoms in liquid or in gas.
(Maxwell distribution) when water in contact with another hot object, some atoms will move fast enough to leave liquid and go to gas form. (evaporation) and so are atoms in gas with low speed is caught by the liquid (condensation). Evaporation is a cooling process, since fast (hot) moving atoms leave liquid, remaing ones are the slow moving (cold) molecules. This phase chance is also called Boiling. It is related to the pressure of the environment. It starts to happen when pressure of water is equal to the pressure outside. Therefore Boiling point can be changed as we like. It's possible to boil at even 0 degrees celcius if the outside pressure is low. for instance, boiling happens at low temperature at high places like in Mount Everest. Because outside Temperature is low there.(Due to less air remains directly above you. you feel the pressure due to the weight of air directly above you.) what about other end? freezing. There is something special about freezing of water. Contrary to any other material, while cooling near freezing, water volume starts to increase! Its density decreases.
(density is mass per volume) so ice has less density than water and it floats because of that. That is also the reason why lakes starts to freeze from surface first since, at about 4 celcius water Is heavier than 0 celcius water and it goes down. This makes it possible for the sea creatures survive under ice.
